Pros

Some caring, hardworking staff members who really tried helping students who were very much in need, and extremely challenging to work with regarding behavior issues. Some nice students who seemed like they were not in the right placement. A few students I felt like I could really help.

Cons

Toxic, violent behaviors. Nothing you can do about extreme disrespect and threats to students or staff. Heavy workload. No books, very few laptops that were broken regularly, especially by students throwing them, etc., but teachers had to make their own curriculum. No scheduled breaks, no lunch for SOME people. Some staff just walk out of the room, disappear, and leave the other alone, which is not safe or ethical. Certain people were favored and that was "let go," while others would leave out for 5-10 minutes for a bathroom or quick break and be reprimanded. Professionalism was not promoted. Stopping fights and physical managements was sad to watch daily, and sometimes not done appropriately. You need to be physically strong and willing to get hurt (to do PM) and emotionally very strong to not let any behaviors and verbal abuse get to you. Administration needs improvement as far as professionalism.

Pros

-The main pro is the fulfillment you from working with this diverse and challenging group of children. - The amount of locations give you more variety in where you choose to work

Cons

-at my location the life skills children are taught in a open bay style class rooms. it is often very noisy and hard to get the students to concentrate. Often times one student being overwhelmed has a domino effect on the other students because of the constant noise -I don't feel respected as a professional and often time feel that I am suffering a punishment of others who worked here in the past. we are not allowed breaks or to leave the building for lunch. when I asked for clarity on the matter i was told that it is because staff in the past would leave for break and not return. I don't think its fair to punish everyone for the decisions of a few people. - Administration makes decisions without considering how it affects the staff that is left to execute said decisions. I don't feel respected as a professional and I often times don't feel heard by my admin team until something goes wrong. Our students haven't had a gym class all year due to a scheduling conflict. We communicated this in September, it is March and our students still don't have a gym class.
