TNC - a great mission, but management isn't great - Anonymous employee The Nature Conservancy Employee Review

Pros

It's so important to protect the rich diversity of life; TNC has great global vision, although the national organization is still struggling to find the best ways to be effective in international conservation and efficient in national programs. TNC has good political clout in the state, national, and international circles.

Cons

Many people feeling hurt by recent lay-offs; management needs to convey to employees the importance of core productivity; scientists are underpaid, but that's primarily because there have always been so many people ready to take their jobs. Peter Principle applies here; many people doing a good job in the field are promoted to management positions but are ill-equipped to be leaders and managers. Some leaders and managers are brought in, but not well trained in the core mission.

Pros

Mission is awesome. Great work-life balance.

Cons

Prioritizes comfort over continuous improvement. Very bureaucratic and slow. Incredibly sensitive culture to a point of extremity--don't think you're in a safe space or that you can be open with any communication. Someone will be offended by your honesty and the backlash is yours to manage. They prefer people to just go with the flow even if it's painful, inefficient, etc.
