Pros

Important mission carried out by committed staff. Compensation and benefits are competitive. Great place to work if you have the right manager. States/countries/departments have ability to hire own staff, make strategic decisions, control own budgets, but still have the benefit of being part of a large org with centralized systems, training, and so much expertise.

Cons

Opportunities limited in smaller business units. Quality of management is very uneven from business unit to business unit. Training for new supervisors and new business unit directors is seriously lacking. Little recourse if you end up with a supervisor who doesn't know what they are doing or doesn't uphold organizational values. When business units run into trouble (e.g. leadership/staff turnover, pandemic funding crunch) -- the organization will not step in until the situation is truly critical.

Pros

Some incredibly kind, smart, and passionate employees. Above average pay for a non-profit (could be better), fulfilling mission, great benefits (healthcare, PTO, 8% 401k match)

Cons

The higher up you go in the org, the worse it gets. Executive leadership is abysmal and they completely eroded trust in their ability to lead. Most of the C-suite needs to be replaced with people with higher EQ. Marketing in particular has an extremely toxic corporate culture that’s become immensely worse in the past 3-5 years. Layoffs were never a common occurrence, but in the last couple years, they happen with no rhyme or reason and those exact roles that were eliminated are seemingly reposted just mere weeks after folks are pushed out. Beware of what team you’re joining. It’s a mixed bag. Some amazing teams with incredible leadership, and some not.
