Less than "WOW" - Seasonal Customer Loyalty Team Membe The Zappos Family Employee Review

Pros

Free food from the Bistro along with a fun and unorthodox working environment. We also got free food on the Call Center floor (and even alcohol once!). Employees are encouraged to be unique and different. There's always fun social activities going on everyday. I liked being able to come to work in my pajamas a few times. Good employee discounts on merchandise from the Zappos website. I like the idea that we were "empowered" to make decisions to give customers discounts to "WOW" them. I had many interesting phone calls with different people all over the country that made the time go by quickly and easily. Incentives for "WOW"s and raffle prizes.

Cons

There is a saying, "It's not what you know, it's who you know", and this is definitely true of Zappos. There's a pressure to fit into what they think is the perfect "culture". If not, you don't stick around. Even though I only worked as a seasonal employee in the Call Center (which only paid $11.00 an hour), I learned very quickly I wasn't made of the stuff that made a true "Zapponian". I'm not the most extroverted person around people I don't know very well and if you want to succeed here, you may have to be something you're not to have any kind of future. After a while I became burnt out on the constant pressure to be happy at all times and to be "fun and a little weird". Plus I caught a bad cold most of time I was there. The constant spraying of Lysol by my co-workers made me sicker, I think. I also wished we had gotten some more training on the actual products themselves. I know there's thousands of products and we could not possibly learn them all in a short amount of time. But it was kind of embarrassing to have a customer call and not being able to sound like I knew what I was talking about. I also wish I had gotten more praise and recognition for a job well done. Again, this goes back to fitting in. I got "props" from customers several times and told my supervisor about it, yet I was never acknowledged through the department emails to the entire team like other people did.

Pros

In the beginning of my time at the company, there were so many positives. I struggle to find a single one, now.

Cons

Everyone from old Zappos quit or was forced out and replaced by people who have clearly never had a job before, yet get paid way more than I do. Leadership is scarily terrible. I went to HR on leadership many times but they didn’t care and told me I was the problem for enjoying the “old Zappos”. I am not allowed to list specific names in my review or else “new Zappos” remove it, but do not join marketing for LACK of experienced, smart, and kind hearted leadership.
