Pros

The ability to work from anywhere. Most of the people at the company are really smart and fun to work with. The work is interesting and challenging and everyone works really hard to accomplish their goals. The compensation is fair and in line with the market. The technology is top notch.

Cons

Unclear and often unprofessional or aggressive communication at the executive level. High turnover The culture as described does not always ring true in reality. Transparent, 360-degree feedback is pushed hard as a pillar of the culture from your first day, yet many executives do not participate. Working remotely is awesome, but you are expected to be available almost all the time as taking "unplugged" time off is not encouraged. This is more noticeable on the operations side, not as much on the technical side.

Toptal Response

We intentionally cultivate a culture of direct feedback because we are focused on growing and improving (both Toptal and ourselves). We expect everyone on our team to give direct feedback whenever they see areas for improvement. With regards to turnover: as a rapidly growing company, we need to ensure that everyone on our team is committed to and capable of driving our long-term growth. Toptal is thus not going to be a great fit for everyone, and we do not shy away from making sure we have the right people on our teams.

Pros

Professional and interested in quality work.

Cons

Not really a con, but more work waiting than hours allow.

Pros

Met some good dedicated employees and freelance workers.

Cons

Lack of any real industry solutions or capabilities since 100% of delivery services are freelance contractors. Model has been successful as providing staff augmentation to clients, but all intellectual capital and outcomes are owned by the clients or the freelancer. Toptal is simply a staffing platform broker who marks up the freelance talent. Great if you need a plumber, but not if you're planning to build a bathroom.
