Pros

Remote and fairly flexible working Pay is OK but variable amongst the same group An interesting model with value to the market

Cons

Where to begin…. Toptal is the dragon’s dungeon. You are so enamoured by the cave initially but once inside will be consumed by the dragons (these people being very incompetent middle managers and the People team). Never have I seen such blatant disregard for individuals. People hide behind their laptops (pretending to be working very hard when they are clearly offline) then logging on for team meetings to share their two cents worth. These people are then promoted. The “All style no substance” kind. The best and smartest people have unfortunately left now. Some just disappear mysteriously without a trace and no explanation given by anyone. Most of the positive reviews come from the freelancers NOT the core team (and a few fake ones from HR). If you’re a smart person who is going places, just don’t waste your time. There are so many better places out there!

Pros

Professional and interested in quality work.

Cons

Not really a con, but more work waiting than hours allow.

Pros

Met some good dedicated employees and freelance workers.

Cons

Lack of any real industry solutions or capabilities since 100% of delivery services are freelance contractors. Model has been successful as providing staff augmentation to clients, but all intellectual capital and outcomes are owned by the clients or the freelancer. Toptal is simply a staffing platform broker who marks up the freelance talent. Great if you need a plumber, but not if you're planning to build a bathroom.
