Most of the people in the National office are fairly laid back and nice, and the health benefits are very competitive. If you want to work as little as possible, then you've come to the right place and won't ever have to worry about being fired for gross incompetence. The only person I ever saw let go was an employee who for the last 7 years was paid an annual salary of $70,000, despite only having had to work for 7 weeks each year. This particular employee's termination was blamed on budget cuts and the faltering economy. Incidentally, this was the same excuse given to the National staff when they were told that the Board of Trustees had voted to freeze all staff salary raises effective immediately, yet the top five executives where exempted from this ruling and saw their individual salaries increase from the previous year. True to form, the Board never did vote to reinstate salary raises for any of the National staff for the rest of the time that I was with Trout Unlimited. However, the Board continued to exempt and uphold annual salary raises for the top five executives who continued to receive salary raises while simultaneously telling the rest of the National staff that they needed to "tighten their belts" before annual raises could be reinstated. Granted, there were a few hard working individuals who were truly believed in the mission of Trout Unlimited and cared deeply about the organization. Unfortunately, this goodwill and ethos was routinely taken advantage of by others who knew that these team members could be counted on not to say "No" to anyone- regardless if they worked in another department. Recognizing that they would be paid the same regardless of how hard they worked or how little they accomplished, there was very little incentive for them not to try and get others to do their work for them.
