Working for this company made me feel dirty! - Career Services Ultimate Medical Academy Employee Review

Pros

Met some great co-workers, who later became great friends outside of work. I also experienced the reverse side of recruiting/sourcing. Learned what company structure I would not like to be a part of again.

Cons

“For Profit” school that emphasizes the “profit” in the phrase. Highly unprofessional management that are not qualified, have been handpicked or given the “position” because they know the right people or other "unsavory" situations. The place has gone thru several changes of management and changes of policy, only to go back to the policies they meant to change. Situations like, unprofessional behaviour, brawls and getting run over in the parking garage is the norm of the day. Employees are treated with disrespect and disdain. You will be required to sit when you are told, throw candy at you like an animal, dress like they want you to, go to the bathroom, break and lunch when you are given permission only. Management would visit your desk and complain why are you not there making the 150 calls or more that you need to make. Selective favoritism is alive and well in this environment, if you are not friends or part of the “Clique” you will be given the worst populations and students. However, if they like you, they will spoon feed you graduates that are already placements. This happened to several new career services advisors that were getting placements 3 days into the new job. The name of the game is numbers, even with unethical behavior, you are a star no matter what. Cases of people doing questionable practices and fudging numbers have them become team managers later on. Recently, the school has noted that Glassdoor reviews were in the 2 stars and a half, so they started a person/group that handles the answers for the “image”. This is just smokescreens and mirrors. Conditions have not changed and turnover is still high. The “predator” mentality of preying on “down of their luck”, unemployed and disabled students with high tuitions and then trying to find them a job is what you will be dealing with most of the time. Try to avoid this job, unless you really need a job. If you are smart , use it as a stepping stone. Benefits are terrible across the board. No real reason to join this company unless you really need to build on sourcing/recruiting experience.

Wow, it sounds like you had a terrible experience as an employee at UMA. And we’re genuinely sorry about that. We try really hard to ensure our staff are well prepared to be successful, even in the midst of high expectations. We also know UMA is not right for everyone. While we disagree with your comments, we also know that addressing them in this forum will not resolve your displeasure with your employment experience. Therefore, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors; and that you’ll find a career that is rewarding and fulfilling.

Pros

Overtime available, when need it

Cons

The work environment was highly scripted, making it difficult to build genuine rapport with prospective students. Employees were expected to follow approved scripts very closely, and even small deviations could be treated as compliance issues. At the same time, compliance expectations were not always clearly communicated, which created unnecessary stress. Management felt overly focused on micromanagement, contributing to a high-pressure work environment. During my time there, I also heard a prospective student comment on what they perceived as a lack of diversity within the organization, which stood out to me. Overall, I found the culture stressful and inflexible. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this employer to those looking for a supportive workplace with clear expectations and the flexibility to communicate authentically.
