Pros

I worked here for 3 years in the Student Finance Department and generally, I really enjoyed it. The initial training at that time was about two weeks, and it was both appreciated and pretty intimidating/exhausting. However, we also had Friday trainings every week and after a while, those regular sessions helped me feel confident as a professional student finance advisor despite the fact that I had zero previous experience. (Also, note: I worked very hard and was promoted in less than a year, so I was fortunate to avoid phone-burnout.) There seemed to be a lot of room for promotions within the department and even into other departments, so if you can avoid getting caught up in petty politics and jealousies -- this may take some effort! -- you could gain a lot of experience here. Some managers were obviously better than others, but I found everyone in mid- to upper-management easy to talk to and very down to earth. The pay was also decent and overtime hours were offered on the weekends and holidays, but it was never mandatory. Benefits kicked in after 90 days. I had a great time here.

Cons

If you don't work toward a promotion, the phones can really wear you down. The calls are very repetitive and the shouts to "Stay on the queue!" or "Be available!" are frustrating when you're taking call after call after call. The teams were small and always changing, which was great; however, it also led to animosity and gossip when people were promoted. The environment was VERY loud, but that's not shocking as this is a call center with a Wii and various other games scattered around. This didn't strike me as a career position, despite being promoted; it was still always "just a job" to me, even though I gained a lot of experience and friendships in my position(s). That said, if you're looking for a career, be patient enough to wait for promotions to upper-level management or maybe check out some other departments. This one sees a lot of burnout and turnover.

Pros

Overtime available, when need it

Cons

The work environment was highly scripted, making it difficult to build genuine rapport with prospective students. Employees were expected to follow approved scripts very closely, and even small deviations could be treated as compliance issues. At the same time, compliance expectations were not always clearly communicated, which created unnecessary stress. Management felt overly focused on micromanagement, contributing to a high-pressure work environment. During my time there, I also heard a prospective student comment on what they perceived as a lack of diversity within the organization, which stood out to me. Overall, I found the culture stressful and inflexible. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this employer to those looking for a supportive workplace with clear expectations and the flexibility to communicate authentically.
