Pros
This job is great for networking. Since we're all over the hospital you get to meet people and see a lot of new things. I've only been here a short while, but it's allowed me to figure out what I'm interested in and find a career path. VCU also helps pay for some of your degree which is incredible! The benefits are wonderful as well. Dental, Medical, Vision, etc. I enjoy my leadership team, they are very helpful and caring. They will try to work with you as best they can if you've got something going on. My co-workers are amazing too, we share many laughs and are always there to help each other. Some of us even hang out outside of work! You truly learn a lot in this position. We learn information on CPR, Arrhythmia's, telemetry, Code responses, and so much more. This job gives you great satisfaction.
Cons
The pay definitely isn't what it should be for all the workload we have, but the benefits make up for that. We are on our feet 95% of the time, but then again we are Transport, so what would you expect? The walking doesn't bother me too much, but other team members have complaints. It's VERY important to get good walking/running shoes. Recently we merged Radiology Transport and Patient Transport departments into one. The merge itself wasn't awful, but I think there could've been other ways to improve the overall merge. Now that we've been merged for a few months I think it's going well. This merge also increased the workload, but the pay didn't increase with it. Like I stated above, I enjoy my leadership team, but other team members are less enthusiastic when it comes to them. There are instances in this job where leadership has to abide by HR/Hospital policy, it's not up to them. Also, some things take time. You can't always expect a fast solution to a problem. There's a chain of commands it has to follow. The complaining is definitely a con. Team members complaining about the basics of their job. When you apply for this job there is a description on what duties you will be responsible for and expectations for you in the department. We are responsible for caring for Human Beings, even if only for a short time. Certain things are zero tolerance. However, patient transport is probably the most forgiving department in the hospital.
