Pros

Voalte is the most engaging work environment I've ever been a part of. People may not think of Sarasota as a beacon for young, intelligent, ambitious people, but Voalte has done a tremendous job bringing in lots of talent. There are over 100 employees and yet very few strangers. People here work together well. There is an expectation of excellence (which breeds more of it) and there are very few "weak links". There's a lot to like.

Cons

Like any growing company, there are times where it feels like there's a lot of change. People come and people go. Processes change. Departments realign. Some people don't like change and a fluid work environment. It's not the best thing, but it's a necessary evil because our industry, customers, and competitors are rapidly evolving. Some positions travel excessively and are overworked. There may be a tendency towards burnout. Employee training/onboarding is very much sink or swim. You have to be willing to ask your coworkers a lot of questions and go out of your way to learn stuff on your own. While difficult, you could argue that this weeds out people who aren't smart enough or resourceful enough to figure it out.

Pros

This company really cared about putting out the best product for healthcare staff.

Cons

They were acquired by a larger healthcare company and lost most of its uniqueness.

Pros

Voalte pioneered a lot of hospital communication improvements, as well as open source libraries. Their software is deployed in lots of hospitals and works well. If you want to gain experience with widely deployed enterprise software, with a bit of startup culture, Voalte is a great place to be.

Cons

The company had about 150 employees in 2014, and of those only 5 worked on their core iOS application (that and the backend where pretty much their only products). During my time there we were suffering without a single backend developer for about half a year, and sometimes were forced to make client-side dirty fixes since we couldn't get management to hire a backend developer. For every developer there were 10 marketing and 5 legal "analysts". The company risked not being able to issue security patches and crucial updates for the software for an extended period of time because all the money went to salespeople, which didn't seem to even get enough clients (in a relatively easy market with few competitors). A couple months after I left (for another startup), they had to cut down on staff, and of course they fired the developers, which IMO are the breadwinners in the company. Im sure they are doing fine now, but its a shame that the company didn't allocate resources properly and continue groundbreaking work.
