Pros
Competitive salary and benefits for Pittsburgh area, good amount of vacation days, flex-time, job security due to stable industry, tuition reimbursement, new headquarters building in Cranberry
Cons
Leadership doesn’t emphasize planning and doesn’t prioritize goals. Management is in a reactive mode and always promotes something as a “crisis” situation that needs to be address. Also, a good work environment is not actively promoted and communication at times can border on unprofessional. Promotions are based on years of experience rather than performance. Typically one is promoted approximately every 3 years regardless of performance. There is a lack of accountability at all levels of the organization. When an underperformer does not complete a task, the task is regularly assigned to someone else. This is a disadvantage to hard-workers and the good employees. The IT systems are outdated and, as a result, many of the non-management jobs are transactional in nature rather than analytical. Any analysis is typically done at the management level and there is no employee development program to change this. Most people don’t remember but Westinghouse (as part of the old Westinghouse corporate conglomerate) nearly failed in the 1990s due, in part, to poor leadership. Most of the senior managers worked here under the old conglomerate and, unfortunately, they have carried over many of the practices and behaviors that existed in the 1990s.
