Pros

WillowTree has far and away the best culture of any company I've worked for. The core values are well thought out, and constantly reviewed, and leadership clearly cares a lot about employees and it shows. The culture is extremely open, and I feel like I could go to anybody in the company with a problem and be heard, which is not something I've experienced in other places. I never felt like "the new guy". From day one, my input and experience was treated as valuable, and I almost immediately felt like a part of the company just like everybody else. The work is varied and interesting, and there's so much opportunity to learn and grow as a person and as an engineer. Everyone seems to love working here, and those who do end up leaving seem genuinely sad to do so. I couldn't ask for a better company to work for. The Durham office is a beautiful and welcoming place to work in, and there's lots of good snacks. Weekly Lunch n' Learn presentations by fellow Trees, or outside speakers are a great resource, and weekly team lunches are a great opportunity to connect with the people you work with. Compensation is on par with the standard salaries in the area, and the benefits are excellent

Cons

I have no complaints about WillowTree. That said, it is an agency, and there is the possibility of some volatility in the projects that you work on, but that comes with the territory of working for an agency, and that's part of what makes the job interesting for me - getting to work on lots of different things over the course of my time here.

Pros

Lots of really nice, and smart people who are very collaborative and excited to share their knowledge. This is not a prestigious place to work, so I was a bit surprised by just how smart and competent people are at WillowTree or TELUS Digital, whatever our name is. The offices are great and the office culture is ridiculously good. Huge shoutout to the employees (it's def not upper management) who go out of their way to make the office culture great. Depending on what project you're on, it can be a pretty chill place to work. If you're early in your career and need experience, the variety of projects makes this a genuinely good opportunity.

Cons

The biggest con is the compensation. It's so terrible, and far below the industry standard that I don't really see how anyone could stay here long term. They don't give raises, no one is getting promotions. There's also quite a lot of restructuring going on, and very poor communication about it. Which is par for the course in the tech industry at this point, but worth noting. It feels relatively stable for now, but I really have trouble seeing how their tech services division is going to survive as AI decreases the cost to build software. Plus, tech services as part of TELUS Digital doesn't really make any sense long term. It's a contact center business with a bunch of people that randomly make expensive mobile apps? It seems to be making enough money for now to keep going, but I feel like that could change any moment.
