Pros

* Really great people. Everybody is wonderful to work with and reliable. * You will learn a lot, especially out of school * Management is transparent * Feedback is taken seriously by management * Good benefits overall (parental leave, sabbaticals, etc) * Offices are super nice (pre Covid)

Cons

* Your experience may vary depending on the client/project. Some are miserable to work on, others are much more enjoyable * While WillowTree is generally transparent, their salaries are not. There is very little visibility into what your pay will be should you get promoted. * Compensation is not very competitive, especially with more and more companies giving the ability to work remotely post COVID. I don’t think living outside the Bay Area makes up for the gap here. * WillowTree claims to be a team of “A Players”. But if that’s true why are we not paid like A players? * If you’re not careful, growth can be tricky as you can get pigeonholed pretty easily into one platform as an engineer. You really have to advocate for yourself here. * There’s a lot of cheerleading about how great we are, and sometimes it just gets old.

WillowTree Response

Thanks for the review. Like many companies, we struggled with the financial implications of COVID when many of our hotel and other clients had to suspend projects. We chose to do zero layoffs but instead temporary comp reductions (which were lifted at end of 2020). We are now on other side and having increased comp rapidly over the first 4 months of 2021, and will look to continue doing so. 100% agree that A players should be paid like A players.

Pros

Lots of really nice, and smart people who are very collaborative and excited to share their knowledge. This is not a prestigious place to work, so I was a bit surprised by just how smart and competent people are at WillowTree or TELUS Digital, whatever our name is. The offices are great and the office culture is ridiculously good. Huge shoutout to the employees (it's def not upper management) who go out of their way to make the office culture great. Depending on what project you're on, it can be a pretty chill place to work. If you're early in your career and need experience, the variety of projects makes this a genuinely good opportunity.

Cons

The biggest con is the compensation. It's so terrible, and far below the industry standard that I don't really see how anyone could stay here long term. They don't give raises, no one is getting promotions. There's also quite a lot of restructuring going on, and very poor communication about it. Which is par for the course in the tech industry at this point, but worth noting. It feels relatively stable for now, but I really have trouble seeing how their tech services division is going to survive as AI decreases the cost to build software. Plus, tech services as part of TELUS Digital doesn't really make any sense long term. It's a contact center business with a bunch of people that randomly make expensive mobile apps? It seems to be making enough money for now to keep going, but I feel like that could change any moment.
