Good window-dressing, but poor management and job security - Senior Program Manager Yahoo Employee Review

Pros

Free stuff: food, coffee, snacks, movies, concerts, shuttles, and some very friendly employees. Best for SW engineers.

Cons

Quarterly, stacked ranking reviews have intensified the "watching one's own back" and micromanagement and quarterly terminations along with the ongoing layoffs. Transfers and advancement is possible if you brown-nose with the right higher-level managers, but opportunities to learn and grow aren't available, especially if you don't have CS degree or Masters. Management/people skills are not valued there;and some managers like to yell and swear at employees during meetings and bully during 1:1s because they lack these skills, yet they often get promoted.

Pros

Relatively easy to get things done for a company with such a long history. Certainly not "start up" like, but processes like resource allocation have less overhead than working at a company like Google. Pay was pretty good for the midwest. I hear they are currently pretty open to remote work. It's also not the hardest place to work.

Cons

Opportunities are limited in software engineering. Since Apollo took over, SE was viewed mostly under the lens of "what is the least we can invest here to get the job done". There used to be a really good office in Champaign with lots of very talented software engineers put together. That's gone now.
