Pros
A privately held company with accessible management, the size of mW means it can move quickly and be responsive to client needs. The management team here may not be politically correct or as HR approved as some corporations, but I firmly believe that the leadership team here will do it's best for people. Give them your hard work, your loyalty and they will do their best to take care of you. My advice to someone joining mW would be work hard, learn hard and advocate for yourself. Always remember that this is a business, that means you may have others come in behind you at higher rates of pay. However, bear in mind that’s not personal, it’s just a reality of business. In turn you will work with some great people, clever, funny and hard working will outweigh the slackers. The sense of community is strong and for the most part positive. Working for a small company will give you a chance to learn resilience, adaptability and focus. Pay attention, work hard and don’t take the bad days personally. At it’s best mW is hard to beat for best practice in ticketing and customer service protocols. There is much to learn here, take advantage of that opportunity and you won’t regret your time with mW the key is learning when to try and develop your career inhouse or move forward elsewhere.
Cons
Some of the very best things about working at mW can also prove to be the worst on bad days. A small team means any sickness, sudden team changes etc., can hit hard. Open source software gives flexibility, but also pain points. As a small company they can’t really build in much flexibility for their team members, bear that in mind if you have young children. Pay is not the best, and it’s firmly based on market rate and the strength of negotiating skills for newcomers. Upward mobility can be difficult in some departments. Worth keeping in mind that ‘fair’ and ‘equitable’ are two very different words. There are many times you may feel something isn’t ‘fair’, but might have to admit that is in fact ‘equitable’. On the worst of days, you might feel this company deserves a 2 star rating, exhausting as it can be - do try to hold on to the fact there are fewer 2 star days than 4/5 star days. Don’t expect perfect and you won’t hate working at mW.
