Pros

The bonuses provided when they’re short staffed and they’re scrambling to find workers can be nice. But if it were up to them I’m sure they’d often give 1:9 or even more than 9 patients to nurses since it seems they stay accepting admissions even when they might not have the staff for it. They’ll even call staff off on the rare occasion we are staffed because god forbid a nurse has less than 7-8 patients. They have BCBS as an insurance but that’s about the pros I can think of for this place. Their pay is higher than the local hospital but at what point does the higher pay outweigh the risk of your health, your license and your patients with the terrible patient loads.

Cons

When hired they tell you that 6-7 patients per nurse is the normal. That’s a lie. Frequently you’ll have 9 patients and they don’t consider acuity until account (we have had people who makes you think why they’re even there and don’t/can’t participate in therapy) I’ve seen nurses even have 10-11 patients. Staff is leaving to go travel since they’re being stretched thin here anyways. They would rather nurses have 8-9 patients and call of nurses versus letting them have 6 and have a decent stage staffing ratio. You’d think the acuity would be less but you’ll get patients who you’ll wonder why they were even let inside the first place and probably need to be in a hospital instead. It’s not safe for the staff or patients and due to sometimes having a high acuity the patients suffer when the staff has to focus on higher acuity patients who shouldn’t be there. Employees leaving because they’re treated like stepping stones and because if they’re going to have their licenses risked they might as well go travel and make more money than this place.

Not for everyone

Pros

- compensation is competitive - good company benefits - possibility for mobility within the company

Cons

- lack of understanding from supervisors and coworkers - if you're not well liked by other employees, good luck to you - supervisor expectation of no breaks, working after hours - lack of integrity within non-clinical leadership (at least from my experience)
