Good Programs, Bad Management

Pros

Strong mission and super smart people

Cons

Not a lot of promotions and "raises" are way less than inflation. Bosses expect employees to work nights/weekends, and to go to multiday staff retreats at casinos/resorts--good luck if you have kids. DEI efforts are weak.

Pros

The benefits are the best, from robust health benefits to unlimited vacation time and choice of hybrid or remote schedules. EDF’s compensation package is above standard in comparison to other nonprofits.

Cons

Typical nonprofit environment, do a lot more with very little resources. While some managers are understanding and supportive, others are just absolutely unreasonable with their needs and requirements. Some tend to over work and push tight deadlines on their associates. There have been several times where I was pushed to work nights and weekends. A program manager even bothered me on vacation once because she wanted something done - I of course ignored her. I have even seen an associate wanting to leave early from work sick, and while on her way home, received several messages on Slack from a manager to complete specific tasks (that could have waited for another day) when she gets home. Burn out is an issue!!

Management enables the toxic culture, so don't even bother

Pros

The mission is what drew me in. Summer Fridays is nice too.

Cons

Teams and managers have analysis paralysis. Decisions just do not get made, no matter how time sensitive or important they are. They hide behind "consensus building" when it's really about avoiding blame. Working from home did not alleviate the office politics issues, it only exacerbated them. Like many nonprofits, the relationship between the organization and its employee base is extractive. The expectation is that, because the mission is important to you personally, you will be willing to deal with long hours and under market pay. There are known problem managers who the org protects. Overall, it is a very corporate environment.
