Rewarding yet frustrating.

Pros

You have the opportunity to work with incredibly talented people. For most positions the compensation is competitive. Benefits are great -- ERCOT provides a contribution of 10% of your salary to your 401K every pay period regardless of what you put in.

Cons

ERCOT is a quasi-government entity established by the Texas Legislature. It's not for profit and highly regulated by the Public Utility Commission (PUCT). These constraints undermine any attempt to recognize the need for change and respond unless mandated by the PUCT. Things move much slower than in the private sector and people stay in some positions much longer than they should. Just because you can't perform or in the wrong role is no reason to move you. A layoff in late 2010 appears to be solely to reach a magic number to satisfy the PUCT and now some areas are suffering as a result of limited resources.

Pros

The employees are good hard working employees.

Cons

The leadership is managed by the members of the PUC, who are appointed by the Governor. This is very policial in nature and the management team can not really manage. They spend all the time looking over thier shoulder. Audit and fear rule the company.

The PUCT runs this show

Pros

Decent work-life balance Lots of different technologies and interesting problems to work on

Cons

Develoment director is dis-engaged and ineffective when he is. The PUCT causes the executive department to have the highest attrition in the company (all replaced and then some in less than 24 months) There have been 3 CIOs in 5 years and the current one will leave at the end of 2010. There have been 4 CEOs in 5 years (Bob Kahn is gone). This is not a place to progress beyond a team manager.
