Pros

The equity will hopefully be worth something someday

Cons

- If you’re driven to be a successful sales professional ethos sadly is not the place for you. -You’ll have insecure, unorganized and inexperienced managers who want to hover over you all day. -Managers don’t care for feedback -Managers will use constant borderline emotionally abusive passive aggressive comments to try to drive you. I’d recommend getting hair loss medication before starting this job -I was told by a manager “you’ve been average” after finishing #1 and #3 on my team of roughly 17 people in sales back to back months. -Management will constantly let you know how replaceable you are and how they’ve been interviewing great candidates for the team. I was told by a manager “there’s an expiration date on every life insurance agent”… you are a perishable commodity to them -I started at ethos in July 2021 and my team didn’t have a single person quit the first 6 months I was there. Since January 2022 when new management came in, over half of the team has quit

Pros

1) great direct supervisors 2) hardworking and kind colleagues 3) a lot of ERGs to be involved with 4) when things are going well, it’s a good place to be

Cons

1) executive leadership will make broad and sweeping statements that sound nice and reassuring but are hollow in meaning and misleading. 2) mid level supervisors appear out of the loop and are reactive to executive leaderships’ decisions. It’s discouraging to see people unsure of what’s coming next and there is a general sense of lack of autonomy 3) there is an emphasis on external appearances rather than outcomes

Company seems to lack long-term strategy

Pros

Company has been able to recruit talent from broad swath of top companies; teammates are sharp and hard-charging

Cons

Too many weekly fire drills, seemingly driven by highest levels of exec management. Exacerbated by an approach that seems to be entirely driven by trying to hit quarterly financial targets, many of which can be considered stretch goals at best, and at worst, unrealistic. The company has clearly had a winning formula to get to the current stage of success, so that should be celebrated. At the same time, the current inflection point comes with a very unclear outcome going forward. As a result, work/life balance is pretty terrible for some teams, but maybe is more manageable for others (?)
