Could be a great place to work, but sadly isn't.

Pros

When I first started working at Etsy, the company felt like a magical place. Three years ago, having unlimited sick days, decent PTO, free snacks and a couple of lunches a week felt like actual perks, whereas now this is industry standard (not to mention Etsy has cutback on all of these things tremendously following massive layoffs and restructuring). The main pros I can think of is just experience. For anyone who isn't coming from a tech background, you can learn a lot here (as long as you make it your business to learn, and push your way into experiences, which is not always easy).

Cons

I had several experiences at Etsy that I felt were based in sexism and misogyny, a few of which I escalated to HR and upper management. I felt I was dismissed, and was told the issue would "resolve itself." After a few years at Etsy, I could really see that there is a lot of darkness here, at least in certain organizations. Women are not always empowered to speak up about their compensation, career trajectory, or general experiences within the company. I can't speak for the men there, so I don't know how their experience differs. I would caution any young women working here to be really tough on their managers to ensure they are receiving proper compensation. I left Etsy never being compensated for a large portion of the work I had done.

Pros

Overall, culture and teams are thoughtfu, friendly and inclusive.

Cons

Unreasonable expectations leading to burnout, frustration and undermined performance. Lack of transparency on annual planning. If you do not fit right in, you will be ostracized and fired in months. High-level management expects reports to thrive and excel at meeting goals with little to no guidance. Very little time and training dedicated to those employees not meeting expectations from the get-go.

Thank you for this feedback. We’re glad that what you experienced in the way of camaraderie and culture were what you had hoped for overall. However, for any employee who feels that Etsy’s standards of kind and respectful communication may not have been upheld, management and HR are trained and available to support them. We’re disappointed to hear your perception that some employees are not always provided with opportunities to meet expectations. We utilize a robust onboarding and performance management system in order to support employees’ orientation to Etsy and their professional success. In a committed effort to encourage that long-term success, we’ve enhanced employee and management development by investing in tooling and professional development budgets. Further, we have received great feedback about our Focus Days and Breaksgivings, which allow employees to recharge. We are optimistic that these steps will address the concerns you’ve raised here, and we have already seen progress in this regard.

This is a company with great benefits but no room for growth

Pros

There was a lot of support at Etsy. The benefits were amazing. My 5 years there I felt that I could be open with my work and the benefits and issues that came along with it. I worked with great partners and teams over my 5 years.

Cons

The age old tale at Etsy was that it was able to find someone like myself who had been in the same position for a few years and had never received a promotion. Despite having good review after good review, nothing I did to take on more work ever helped shift a promotion to my direction. Which was already tough because in my 5 years there I had 6 different managers one of them twice, which equals a manager shuffle 7 times. Not only that, but there was never any real direction with where to take my position. Every time I tried to move forward I was told to take a step back because they had no idea where to put me or what to make of my role as it was growing. Also, the benefits are great, but they are also a distraction from the poor pay imbalances within the company.

Thank you for this feedback. We’re glad that what you experience in the way of benefits, openness, and camaraderie were what you had hoped for, but we’re sorry to learn about some of your other experiences. We hear you in this feedback around upward and internal mobility, and it has been a key area of focus for our leaders. We have amped up employee development by investing in tooling and professional development budgets. For management, we’ve invested in enhanced iterations of online management training and development, inclusive even of content focusing on emotional intelligence and conversation foundations. There is still room for improvement and we’ll continue to devote resources toward this.
