Pros

It feels like everyone I interact with wants to do the right thing. That goes a long way for me, and I'm wary of the limits of that within a large company. But it feels like people care about what they do, & want to make the socially beneficial things that the company talks up happen. They're continuing to be remote-friendly, which is good when that's in question more. I haven't felt pressured to put in extra hours, instead there's interest in making sure that you're able to use your PTO, volunteer hours, floating holidays, mental health days, etc.

Cons

It feels like upper/executive management is increasingly interested in squeezing the business model to make the market happy. It's not enough to keep growth stable when the world is in turmoil, there needs to be more growth than there was before. As a result, it feels like upper management sees DEI, employee wellbeing, social causes, seller wellbeing, company reputation as expenses that they would gladly cut if they stopped penciling out in favor of keeping them around. Executive Q&As have started including "Some of our competitors don't do this at all for their employees, so you should be happy we're only reducing this" type phrasing, which is concerning. There's also pressure for teams to align their work to market fads, to show how the company is keeping up on each new tech buzzword even if it would be harmful to the company's reputation to actually carry out & interest stops as soon as the next hot thing shows up.

Pros

Etsy seems like a great place to start one's career. It's a cute workplace, good benefits, fun product. The culture is warm and welcoming.

Cons

Etsy skews very young in its demographic and it seems like this is the first job for a large proportion of the employees. This was frustrating to me as a tech veteran. If you've worked for FAANG or just have a lot of experience in general Etsy may not be the right place for you. Also, there's a lot of toxic positivity going on. Most decisions are made on slack or in person meaning if you work in another time zone or not in the office, you miss a lot, and it's more of an elevator pitch culture than a writing culture -- meaning it can be hard to find documentation or fully understand goals and plans if you're not tight with management. Ultimately it just felt like no one really knew what they were doing.

Pros

There are a lot of lurkers in the company. If I accurately document what’s going on, even to be fair to myself AND the company, they’ll figure me out. So, paranoia runs deep. Which is not a con! Not necessarily. Not in trust and safety. You have to be a little bit rat brained. Pros… you get access to a deep network of smart and interesting people. Access. There’s a lot of swag and side perks: everyone is getting trips to New York. That’s cool. Generally, name brand is very good so people on the street like you. There is a blameless culture with respect to learning and mistakes and in a company admittedly learning on the fly, everyone makes errors. Insurance is really good! Stock awards are generous but with the vesting structure and the cratering economy and you get the idea. It’s the cool kids club. It really is. That’s the best we can do. That’s the best I can say. Room for improvement and maybe we’re trying.

Cons

It’s just a mess. And outsiders are despised. If you want a career either come with a glistening resume and a diamond plated backside, or go try Meta.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re particularly glad that our blameless learning culture continues to positively influence your experience and the opportunities we embrace as a team. However, we’re concerned to hear some of your comments. Management and HR are trained and available to support any employee who feels that Etsy’s standards of kindness and respect may not have been upheld. We encourage you to reach out to your manager or HR Business Partner – whose information you can find on the Intraknit – for confidential assistance.
