Pros

Extremely receptive to hiring people with only academic experience (i.e., fresh out of grad school), which can be a great alternative to those considering post-doctoral work. You'll get a greater variety of work than you thought possible, and have some big brains to bounce ideas off. Something approaching "fun" may ensue. The pay is reasonable. Entry-level employees can get massive overtime.

Cons

Not a particularly helpful or supportive work environment. A fellow employee (or even your boss) will gladly throw you under the bus to save themselves if you share a mistake. No orientation, no actual "managing," little praise or encouragement. The fight for billable work and credit for bringing in clients can make for a tense atmosphere, especially between the more junior and more senior staff, but also for those of equal rank. You are only as good as the amount of money you are bringing in, and little time is afforded for you to learn your job before high expectations are placed. Taking time off (even a personal day) is begrudged and counted against your annual billing quotient.

Pros

Very flexible in types of projects you can work on and areas where you can build your expertise. There are a wide variety of technically challenging projects you can have an opportunity to work on day in and day out. Many brilliant people work at Exponent, providing a stimulating environment for consultants. Management is very approachable. Professors at prestigious universities see Exponent as the best destination for their top students who don't want to stay in academia.

Cons

Emphasis on utilization rate (billable time) can become a distraction to young engineers who need to spend time marketing and developing professionally in order to really become a successful consultant. Exponent is very conservative in terms of capital equipment purchases, believing Exponent's primary value is in our consultants. While this is true, it creates a challenge in marketing to new clients who believe the equipment is necessary to provide a complete solution.

Pros

Smart people to work with. Interesting and diversified types of projects. Rewards success (bring in money). Flexible hours. Decent benefits.

Cons

Poor management that won't take risks. Management will make promises to get a candidate to accept an offer, but once you are there, they will renege on those promises.
