We have a total compensation philosophy. Associate and Senior Associates earn a competitive base salary plus they are paid one times their hourly rate for hours beyond 40 in a week when they are highly billable on client projects. In addition they earn an annual bonus which is tied to their personal performance. Employees who contribute high value to their internal and external clients and colleagues reap excellent financial rewards. Additionally Exponent contributes 7% of base salary to the employee's 401(k) every year without requiring an employee contribution. Sally Shepard, CHRO

Pros

I really love the type of work I do at Exponent. Also, the pay is really great for someone fresh out of grad school. If you're a workaholic you will love to work here. You will learn to stand up for yourself and say no to management.

Cons

Understaffed. Workloads are too high. Managers expect all staff to be workaholics like them who are happy to work evenings/weekends. Who doesn't like casually working a couple hours every night after working a full day? Managers are good at over promising to clients and terrible at managing projects. Managers will ask for crazy things so they can barter with your free time to get what they wanted in the first place (e.g. if they want 10 hours of work over a weekend "I need you to work 30 hours this weekend. Oh you're on vacation, well then I'm sure you can just do this small thing and I'll find someone else to cover for you." When the 'small thing' is 10 hours of work. Also, don't paint staff like they're the bad guy for having a life just because you mismanaged a project or client expectations.) It gets worse during busy seasons.

Pros

Best and brightest minds - recruited high potential MS and Ph'D's from top engineering schools. You never know what project comes in the door for you to work on. Exposure to a lot of different areas. Decent ESPP, retirement and health plans. The right boss can make or break you. In poor ecoonomic times, people are more litigious so employment more steady here. Each office has its own culture.

Cons

Communication from upper mgmt could be better. Some people are managers because they bring in work but manage horribly and do not develop their people. Inside joke is that they train you to be an independent consultant. No work life balance - almost impossible with consulting of this nature. A call comes in and you're on a plane the next day. Show face is prevalant theme - work from home not encouraged which is nuts. Very high turnover. Need more diversity, including women in management.
