Pros

Exposure to more variety of technical problems than you could possibly imagine

Cons

You are essentially responsible for finding your own internal work. You will only be fed for so long. After that grace period you will be scrutinzed weekly and your UT evaluated. Typical targte is 80+% but given that vacation and sick count against you, by working 40h week at 100% the maximum UT you can achieve is 90%. What does this tell you about work life balance? Expect the tiniest infractions to be blown out of all proportion at review time. Do not expect to be told what is really required of you to advance - they will not be upfront about. Senior staf are expected to bring in $150+k of business, promotion to manager requires $500+k, senior manager $750k-1M and Principal $1M.

Pros

You will have exposure to a number of technical challenges and industries. You could easily find your next employer among their clientele. Consider your time at Exponent as getting paid to find a job!

Cons

Job offers are handed out feverishly from Exponent because the company is attempting to hide their shrinking scientific talent from stockholders. Once you report to work there will be nothing for you to do and you will be blamed on a daily basis for their lack of active clients. Senior management in the materials practice is incompetent. As a junior member of the practice you will spend your time explaining technical principles to management and writing their reports. There is little mentoring provided to employees and no opportunity for career development in consulting. Working for this company should be considered a blemish in your work history. Future employers will view your work as lacking technical competency, depth and rigor. High turnover is the direct result of short sighted management greed and the company’s inability to form long term business development.

A Great Place to Leave

Pros

The money was decent. Some of the projects were fun.

Cons

Like most people I was hired out of graduate degree with the dubious claim that I would be spending 90% of my time doing exactly what I did in my grad school project. This was not the case. If you want a career this is not the place for you, unless you are particularly Machiavellian. The managers do not care for employees and regard them as chattel. Little to no attention is paid to training associate level employees. Managers will ask you to perform legally and morally questionable tasks because "that's what the client wants!" Obviously clients pick this company because they are willing to expend people and resources to get the desired "result." Often, you will see legitimate science being thrown out and many managers will go as far as perjuring themselves in open court "for the client." Money is always "tight," yet the company will go on insane hiring sprees before the quarterly to pad the stock price, only to lay everyone off the next quarter. This company is also extremely lax on safety, just read some of the other comments to get a good idea. Bottom line is, find a better company that will actually appreciate your skills and help you grow. This is not the place for you!
