Pros

Working with some brilliant and considerate colleagues.

Cons

Avoid this place unless you are ambitious about succeeding in the consulting field or purely desperate. If this is your first professional job, or if you are transitioning from another industry, do your due diligence first to understand how the utilization system works. You will be told that there are many different aspects of success beyond utilization, but in practice there are not. Before deciding to join, ask your hiring manager how much utilization you may realistically expect from the projects he or she expects to bring in during your first year. If your hiring manager does not seem to have a clear picture of this, they should not be allowed to hire direct reports. You may still accept the offer even if your manager does not have a clear utilization plan for you, but in that case, consider the role closer to a contractor position than a genuine FTE role.

Pros

Generally challenging projects with strong professionals throughout the company. Company is large enough to truly have strength in many disciplines and strong litigation experience.

Cons

Often very long hours. I missed a lot of things with my young children in school. All attempting to move ahead for salary, bonus, advancement. Most Exponent employees are driven, competitive, hard-working. I do not know of any "slackers" at Exponent.

Pros

Diverse work, intelligent and ambitious colleagues, above average compensation package for newly minted PhDs. Giving 2 stars simply because of these perks.

Cons

Extremely poor work/life balance, high pressure on billable hours/utilization, cutthroat/burn-and-churn culture, weak management, poor mentorship opportunities (didn't feel inspired by many leaders), sink-or-swim onboarding (I think this has changed a little since I left), ton of gatekeeping around promotions, and worst of all.... there's very little humanity present in the culture. Almost everyone I knew didn't fundamentally feel as if their office, practice, and/or manager cared about them as a human. Bad managers get promoted so long as they're revenue generating. I would not recommend this company to be a person's first choice.
