Playing for an Elite Team

Pros

I truly feel that at Exponent I am playing for an elite team. We recruit some of the best and brightest minds from Engineering and Science programs all around the country and it shows in the quality of our work. I am continually amazed at the diverse expertise we can bring to bear on the challenging, multidisciplinary problems faced by our clients. Our consultants have “grit”-always wiling to go the extra mile in the pursuit of the right answer. I know it’s cliche to say this, but I “never work on the same thing twice.” In one week I can go from doing stress analysis on a kitchen blender, to analyzing data from a vehicle crash test, to simulating components in a combustion engine, to helping the military develop a new UAV platform.

Cons

- The workload can fluctuate quite a lot and time management can be challenging. This is more a function of consulting in general than anything specific to Exponent. - Consultants are primarily promoted on their ability to keep their utilization high and amount of business they bring in, not their ability to manage people.

Luck, Talent & Timing

Pros

The opportunities vary from office to office, but there is always an opportunity for amazing success. Compensation is top of the line. Many talented associates. Company currently in a transition from a Madmen style work culture to a more progressive work culture thanks to their Northern California roots, but change is slow (national office paternity leave became a new perk).

Cons

No training... you are thrown into the deep-end of the pool. If you survive, it's a Pro. There is a sparse marketing department that only really feeds the top tier. You must reinvent yourself annually until you find a niche (again, luck & timing). Work culture promotes hoarding of work, work credit, and marketing credit. There is a consistent push to move to management and principle even if the science and research is your core love and talent. Work/Life Balance is tough if your are married and/or have children.

Pros

Great people across a variety of different disciplines. Great opportunity to gain expertise and pivot into areas you might not have considered. It's a great place to be if you genuinely want to be a technical consultant.

Cons

Random hours, utilization can be inconsistent. Comp was out of sync with what engineers in the Valley make. Very little company culture.
