Playing for an Elite Team

Pros

I truly feel that at Exponent I am playing for an elite team. We recruit some of the best and brightest minds from Engineering and Science programs all around the country and it shows in the quality of our work. I am continually amazed at the diverse expertise we can bring to bear on the challenging, multidisciplinary problems faced by our clients. Our consultants have “grit”-always wiling to go the extra mile in the pursuit of the right answer. I know it’s cliche to say this, but I “never work on the same thing twice.” In one week I can go from doing stress analysis on a kitchen blender, to analyzing data from a vehicle crash test, to simulating components in a combustion engine, to helping the military develop a new UAV platform.

Cons

- The workload can fluctuate quite a lot and time management can be challenging. This is more a function of consulting in general than anything specific to Exponent. - Consultants are primarily promoted on their ability to keep their utilization high and amount of business they bring in, not their ability to manage people.

The best place for the right people

Pros

- The most interesting work I've come across - much of the work doesn't actually feel like work - Extreme flexibility in terms of what you're doing and when and how you do it, subject to good engineering principles and meeting deadlines - Virtually no micromanagement, useless meetings, or other things that eat into productive time - Lots of control over your career path - Support for continuing education, training, publishing, and additional credentials - Lots of freedom for who you work with - Lots of mentors willing to share advice - Awesome coworkers who have the same drive and dedication you do (Hint: If you don't, this probably isn't the right place for you!)

Cons

- The work never stops coming - it can be very hard to take a break, especially with lots of talented people around who continue to drive forward -Some projects are inflexible in terms of timing, and if you are working on global projects, 9-5 US business hours really don't apply. (But on the other hand, I can set my schedule to meet my needs, i.e. working in the mornings, afternoons free, and then overseas calls in the evenings)

Pros

Some colleagues are incredibly nice, smart, and driven.

Cons

- Work life balance is awful. The higher ups are obsessed with billing at all costs, even at the expense of family life. Work on nights and weekends is very common, if not expected. Most people in the company have terrible work life balance. - The best people seem to leave after a few years. Unfortunately, that means the ones remaining who make it to the top are not the best people you want leading the company. - Senior management acts like everyone can make it to the top and nobody leaves. Instead, there's an obvious high attrition rate and very very few people make it to the top level. But unlike other consulting companies that embrace the "up or out" theory, Exponent seems to pretend that attrition doesn't exist. - Senior management tends to be good at one thing: billing. They have very little actual management skills and are terrible at growing the "lower level" employees' careers. - The company seems to be obsessed with short term returns. They don't care about long term growth of people or the company, only quarter by quarter. This is a really bad long term strategy. - Lots of market credit stealing and taking advantage of young, fresh PhD grads. Unfair system for reward. - The obsession with billing means you will do anything to bill more, even if the tasks are really simple and low level. This means all the technical skills people have developed in their PhDs just erode over time. This is REALLY bad for your long term career.
