Pros

There are many quality people working at Express Scripts.

Cons

HR department does not have a clue how to screen for, how to evaluate positions, and what functions are actually performed by IT positions. This ignorance about IT positions causes them to undercompensate for certain roles within the IT department which leads to a revolving door. HR also has a misconception about the difference between a contractor and an independent contractor. I know in one instance that a contractor was there for almost 18 months and the HR department forced this person to accept a perm position for 35% less or have to leave the company because they said that it was a law that contractors cannot work for more than 18 months. Some of the IT groups that are on call for the weekends must remain available and are not compensated for their availability. The on call person only gets paid if they get called.

Cons

HR is way too political and limits the growth of great employees. They use things like "number of years" to tell you exactly where you need to be in the company. You can't go from F to H because you skipped G. Express Scripts wants to empower the employee (they say), but what they do is really do whatever they can to put you into a system where you go to work everyday, give it your best, go home, and get a marginal raise at the end of the year. If you have a desire to jump the ladder quickly and not be a 50 year old person sitting in a cube, or if you have a desire to move around the company (horizontally) and experience everything the company has to offer, this company isn't for you. You will be limited, unless you know a VP personally. The rating system is crazy - as it gives your manager the ability to determine whether you deserve a 2%, 3% or 4% raise. If you can prove you did an amazing job, your boss can come back and say "you didn't collaborate enough", or "you aren't aligned enough" which in turn sets your "stretch" rating down to a "target" rating... meaning you are getting a shorted raise/bonus. The company pinches pennies, and some managers take it upon themselves to pinch the pennies you might have forgotten to pinch. Fun fact about PTO - they will pay you for your PTO, but if you don't give a full 2 weeks notice before resigning, they don't pay you. A two week notice is a nice thing the employee does for the employer, but they use the two weeks notice to strong arm you into providing it. Seems like legal theft to me.
