Pros

Please do not be dismissive of the themes you see in the reviews, as I've read a lot of honest feedback. I don't get the sense that people are posting these reviews because they were laid off or transitioned. FHI 360 is indeed a great company, but you should have clear goals and expectations if you intend to work here. If you want to just do great work at a place with great colleagues and a competitive benefits package, FHI 360 is absolutely one of the best employers. On the other hand, if you want to continuously grow and challenge yourself, you will feel stifled after a few years here. I tell colleagues and friends that it's a prominent NGO and pursue opportunities here with the intent to learn as much as you can, and then transition to a better opportunity elsewhere. Think about where you are in your life, career and otherwise, and plan accordingly so that you can benefit as much as possible from your experience at FHI 360.

Cons

There is little room for growth here, and HR has openly admitted this is an issue they have heard frequently. When new opportunities arise, the organization prefers to bring in new staff rather than promote current ones. I was informed early on that FHI 360 allows for lateral transitions, but rarely do they promote internal/existing staff. This has definitely proven true. Further, the organization does not invest in professional development of its staff. This type of environment encourages the type of high turnover we have. We have lost great talent because of this and will continue to do so.

Pros

If you are a yes-(wo)man in the right social clique, and are willing to tirelessly do the work of your superiors for a fraction of the pay, FHI 360 can be a friendly place to work for a time. In the rare instances where the subordinates assume the reins, like when a director leaves suddenly, the company prospers.

Cons

FHI 360, is one of the most top-heavy, unorganized and directionless NGOs you can conceive of. Upper management is filled with underqualified and arrogant EX-PATs. It is one of the most caustic environments to work if you happen to voice any measure of collective sagacity. Intelligence, wisdom, tactical thought, and expertise is enthusiastically punished by upper management. Upper management starting from the Associate Directors, all the way to the C-Suite, is unfailingly filled with narcissistic, self-absorbed, conceited, trifling, inept, moronic, and oblivious individuals. Unsurprisingly, these individuals are terrified of their employees who are without a doubt better qualified and in reality handling the bulk of their work. However, those shouldering the bulk of the work rarely administer strategic direction. No opportunities for advancement. Hostile work environment for those not in the "drinking-buddies" club. Fraudulent usage of USAID funds to cover bloated overhead.

Pros

Work-life balance. Friendly atmosphere. Purpose and intentions of the organization are good. Opportunities for movement (lateral and upward) are there, unless you're a researcher without a PhD. Terrific benefits.

Cons

Goofy CEO. Second in charge, the chief strategist, has a proclivity for frequent layoffs--a management consultant, she has brought in allies from the same background. Incredible frequency of turnover in strategy and communications, plus widespread job loss during end-of-grant periods. A top-heavy environment and during "reorgs" they lay off rank and file and shuffle around, and even add to and promote, people at the chief level. Watered down portfolio--went from health-focused to "holistic" in 2011, and revenues in decline ever since.
