Never Quite Know What to Make of FM Global

Pros

A great company at times that does some really great things in its industry. Generally takes care of its people and good benefits. Good career opportunities if you’re willing to move. Some really great people in the trenches...

Cons

Very “silo” organization. Promotions often go to “club” and second generation family members, married couples, etc. Very difficult to keep motivated in such an environment. Constantly promote college grads to next positions who lack experience and generally don’t value experienced field engineers.

Pros

Decent money, but other than that not much good to say.

Cons

Extremely time consuming as the employer is constantly flip flopping on what they want for video. Terrible communication that is always blamed on the employees. Often rude and vulgar when talking about clients or even other employees. Very unorganized and when problems arise due to the management the employees are forced to fix them and are often rushed and yelled at during the process.

Change can be great, IF managed properly

Pros

Exceptional benefits (6% matching 401k contributions, pension, all vested at 5 years). Some really great people work in the company. Opportunities to travel. If you start as a client-servicing engineer, you have virtually unlimited opportunities for movement in the company. Protecting clients' businesses is an admirable goal for a company in this day and age. Lots of employees truly believe in the company's mission.

Cons

Management: while some managers are amazing, more managers micromanage, disrespect employees' professional skills, change your job roles and responsibilities without communicating this with employees in advance and some are not exactly honest. Some employees even seem to be "promoted up" to get them out of their current roles. The company's foray into diversity awareness seems to be just a check box to make them appear modernized and much more work is needed to decrease the effects of the "good ol' boys'" club. And while Agile has merit when done right, trying to implement it in a company that is knowledge-based and still stuck in this "good ol' boys'" club AND lacks enough employees to do it right is punching holes in the ship's hull. All of the changes and lack of increased head count have dropped morale to record low levels. If you don't start as a client-servicing engineer, your career path may be limited as promotions can be scarce due to the archaic grade system. Prospective employees may want to wait a few years to see how all these changes and issues shake out before committing to a job here.
