FFN is a Great Company Who Cares About Their Employees

Pros

Even in the industry downturn of 2015-early 2017, the company maintained good benefits and training opportunities for the staff. In 2018, the company exceeded their goals and good bonuses were paid through their new compensation structure - which was rare in the seismic space. We also received salary adjustments in the spring. The relocation of the corporate headquarters has also been a breath of fresh air. Most employees are happy about the move, despite longer commute time for some of us. The management team is helping to drive more success for the company in 2018 through increased business development and solid customer focus. We also made 2 important acquisitions. I am proud to work for one of the only seismic companies that is growing, not dying on the vine.

Cons

Short-staffed at times which creates stress and burn out. We need more good people to grow our capabilities.

Pros

The ability to travel on the companies dime, and getting equal time off, was by far the best reason to work for Fairfieldnodal offshore. The ships I had the opportunity too work on were mostly clean and accommodations were nice. Management really tried to be fair with scheduling and give you equal time off. Benefits are good, and for a reasonable price to the employee. Coworkers were always willing to help with questions, both Observers and Processors. Party managers worked hard for their crews and were approachable.

Cons

Working for Fairfield changed a lot after the industry dip of 2015-2016. My supervisor was over loaded with responsibility and it leaked over onto my responsibilities, while in the office. Due to the size of the company, and the new management / management style, there was little room for career growth.

Good Small Company

Pros

I spent a year working at FairfieldNodal as a Mate, straight out of a maritime academy. My experience before had been on bluewater vessels and on the Great Lakes, and although the atmosphere and logistics of working with Fairfield were different, I enjoyed my time at the company. Pay is good, and the office is easy to work with generally. I had to take some time off to be with a family member who was ill and the crew manager was very accomodating and professional. When I was performing well on bridge the Party Managers would notice and were generally cool to work with day-to-day.

Cons

Shipboard operations are not focused around the deck/engine departments. The ship is focused on seismic data production. The marine crew perform their jobs and are expected to hit seismic pattern entry points and not have engine issues of any kind all of the time, 24/7. For a good professional this isn't generally a problem, but as any professional mariner should know alot of the time things break, or what have you. Only about 33% of the crew onboard are actual sailors, so any time you have any sort of engine issue, or maybe you miss the entrance to a seismic pattern (which happens occasionally due to handling a ship at near steerageway speeds), folks outside of the marine department like to breathe down your neck. You are dealing with a large group of people who are ignorant of real shipboard day-to-day things, so that can cause friction when combined with that offshore mentality.
