Pros

You are given ample opportunity to promote. You really have to work you tail off. They give you everything you need to succeed. Personally I feel that most of todays generation does not really understand the concept of working. I work from home about 90% of the time. You are given a company car and laptop for personal use (within reason). I have never had a problem getting compensated for overtime worked. Farmers is great about recognizing outstanding performance. It is not uncommon to recieve spot bonuses and gift cards in excess of $50. Farmer's is a company you can retire with.

Cons

It can be stressful at high volume times when you have claims calling all the time. Its not so much Farmers, but the insurance industry as a whole. We are not trusted from the get go. I do not like the changes that Farmers is making to the benefits, but they are still better than what you find at other companies. You can make up to 25% of you annual salary as a bonus that is given out each March. In my opinion the health insurance is quite expensive. I believe it is about $100 a month just for me. It would go up even more if I added my wife.

Pros

The people. There are number of people who have been with the company for a very long time, they know the business in and out and they are extremely valuable. Development opportunity – since the company is owned by Zurich, there are opportunities to work internationally on certain projects or a transfer to Zurich. At the department I worked at, the training was very good, management supported training courses provided by third party and also provided plenty of internal training. The carpool service sponsored by the company is very rare. They encourage employees to carpool, vanpool or taking the public transits.

Cons

People who have been with the company for a long time seem to be left out of promotions. Management does not recognize their importance and how valuable they are. They are often left on the sideline doing “special project”. Salary is generally lower, because they claimed there was Profit Sharing. However, Profit Sharing is going away in 2009 and there is no salary increase to make up the difference. The benefits used to be very good, but they are also changing in 2009 and not for the better. They are combining vacation days with sick days. Employees get a set number of pay-time-off, sick and vacation days both count toward the pay time off, so it is really up to the employees not to get sick. The company is extremely cost-saving minded. They don’t like to spend money on virtually anything.

Pros

The best reason to work for Farmers is they allow outside appointments if they do not want to take on the insureds business. This is especially helpful for hard to write commercial accounts. They do have a good claims service and is getting better.

Cons

Rates are to high. Not competive rates with other insurance carriers in the same location for (auto, home, and life). Its hard to write new business due to strict underwriting criteria. Impossible bonus plans. Every bonus or profitabililty bonus has life insurance issued and paid requirement and a sales count requirement. If you don't sell life you will not get extra paycheck. The amount of income they tell you can make figures in that you will make your bonus. Very few agents actually make bonus's. I made the mistake of listening to how much i could make in 1 to 5 years. District managers advertise on Craiglist for new agents and those compensation figures are exaggerated. Also Farmers has too many agents per city which makes it even harder to take on new clients when competing with agents from your own company If you notice with the other top insurance carriers they have less agents per area which will result in a larger book of business which in return more commisions I would recommend interviewing with other carriers before you commit yourself to Farmers. Also look into independant agencies as well.
