Great People, Bad Tech

Pros

- People are awesome. I would genuinely consider them as friends - Travel (hope you don't get the "reject" sites)

Cons

If you want to be a Software Engineer in the future, then this place is not for you. You will have to teach yourself industry best practices, tech, and general coding outside of work to ensure you don't degrade. "Fast best practices" aren't really best practices at all, and are more like rules to validate cutting corners. Upper management (project managers, architects, tech leads) are clueless about software, and many times, do not understand very basic software principles/paradigms/designs.

Pros

The pay is alright and I like my coworkers.

Cons

+ No 401k matching. + Inexperienced management. + Not a lot of room for career advancement. They will say that you advance within your position but not fulfilling for me. + More focused on getting new people than retaining current ones. + Long hours. + A lot of focus is put on purely number of hours worked. They burn their people out and replace them with new ones. + It's very hard to buy a house as an IC or Trainer since you have to move so often. You can't really get any equity out of it.

Thank you for your feedback. We welcome any constructive conversations with FASTies who have a genuine interest in improving the “FAST experience”. We appreciate that some of your feedback appears to relate to your experience with PM(s) so we encourage you to speak with HR or a Partner. On career advancement: It is true that most FAST consultants hold the title of “Implementation Consultant” or “IC”. This is by design. We believe one key to our success is the way teamwork is woven into our culture. One way we do this is to minimize the number of titles. While everyone has different strengths, skills and interests, no tasks should be “below anyone’s paygrade”. Everyone must be willing to do whatever it takes for the Team to succeed. What’s really important is that we provide FASTies an environment wherein they gain knowledge, acquire new skills and learn to take on greater responsibilities. To us, this is the essence of real “growth”. When FASTies grow in this way, increasing their contribution to the Team’s success, we recognize and reward their accomplishments. We do so via compensation and new opportunities, among others. Not all ICs are paid the same nor do they have the same responsibilities. People who find fulfillment by accumulating titles, counting the rungs and people below them, are not a good fit for FAST. On long hours: Leaders are often the ones who work not only the smartest, but also the hardest. FAST is the leader in this industry. We hope that FASTies are proud to be part of something special and unique, and that they recognize that their hard work helps keep us on this path. Someone for whom a 40-hr standard work week, and 100% predictability are the priority may not be a good match with FAST. That said, we recognize work/life balance is important to sustaining our success. We appreciate that everyone needs time to rest and re-energize. If a FASTie feels they need that break, we encourage them to speak openly with their supervisor, HR or a Partner. In addition, you mentioned mental health and FAST has programs to support wellness and mental health. These are highlighted in our monthly newsletter and you can also reach out to your PM or HR to discuss the programs. One step FAST is making improve work/life balance is to increase the size of our team to help meet the growing demand for our products and services. To this end, FAST continues to recruit aggressively. However, it does take time to cultivate people and expertise. We want to ensure that in doing so, the quality of our work, our methodology, and our culture are preserved. As we continue through this period of growth, we do as much as we can to help employees balance their work/personal lives. For example, we communicate project schedules so employees can better plan “R&R” around project peak times. FAST works with project managers and supervisors to more evenly distribute workloads throughout the project life cycle. FAST Partners are also actively involved in balancing workloads across projects.
