      Great agency, but diminishing returns for motivated people

      Pros

      Don't get me wrong, FHWA is very deserving of their Top Federal Agencies to work for, which is why it is deserving of 4 out of 5 stars. Management is usually very supportive and there is a great team-like atmosphere. They allow for a very flexible work schedule and have a great work-life balance.

      Cons

      Departments are sometimes silo'd and management may not be supportive if interagency politics are involved. Also, merit-based promotions and rewards are no more than "atta-boys," which can be disheartening when advancing.

      Pros

      Great opportunities for promotion if you are white. Great place if your only goal in life is to get a steady paycheck.

      Cons

      No opportunities for promotion if you are Hispanic or African American. In the private sector, you work to help your company make money. At FHWA Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, you work to satisfy someone's ego.
