Frustrating Experience - FireEye Labs

Pros

FireEye had smart engineering team and great technology.

Cons

There was no review process similar to Google or Microsoft. There was no goals, commitments, extended goals leading to the review which would give fair chance to grow. Instead, a lack of proper review process led to ladder climbing. Manager which I was reporting to would promise anything to get the work done. After delivery of work, they will not honor their commitments. There was integrity issue within the team in taking credit of other peoples work which was a not a pleasant experience. There was no meaningful / learning conversation with the manager rather most of the time ended up doing his job. Everything which goes right manager will get the credit if anything goes wrong put you under the bus.

Pros

CEO Kevin Mandia knows his stuff and loves the industry. De Walt was a joke.. Mandiant is the best in the business at remediation ...but really expensive New Headquarters with gym and full cafeteria is really nice. Research is superb and grabs headlines..consistently.

Cons

Subscriptions for email security and endpoint are average at best (see Gartner) Employees I met are phoning it in. No one cares...They know their best days are past. Lack of growth. For a high tech company.

Pros

Interesting work in the wide-open field of cyber security. Rank and file engineers still seem to care and there are still some smart people doing useful new technology. Current CEO and upper management saved the company from going under (due to the previous CEO's unsustainable bad management and reckless, out-of-control spending), and have earned credibility with the workers "in the trenches".

Cons

Growth is slow and slowing. Management placates shareholders by a continual spiral of more and more cost cutting. Company just moved to a smaller square footage headquarters, and has now eliminated the perks you may see in earlier reviews: no more free lunches, no more free snacks or beverages. Instead, they're introducing a vending program to sell concessions to overworked employees (hiring has dried up, even for replacing some of the attrition). Technology is now dated because malware has moved on, away from the attacks that FireEye used to detect so well. Middle management is an obstacle to success, mostly interested in not rocking the boat; don't bother looking for any leadership or technical direction from them. A recent employee meeting where resource and leadership concerns were raised was stifled by angry middle management who dodged responsibility while pushing more work onto people to make up for their own failed management.

We are sorry to hear about your experience with us. Moving into our newer, larger HQ building has allowed many different departments to truly come together as one team, working towards our shared mission to relentlessly protect our customers. Although our lunches and snacks are no longer free, they are highly subsidized and provide a much wider variety of options. Focusing on the employee experience is a top priority for us, and the more successful we are as a company, the greater our ability to provide for our employees. We appreciate your detailed review and advice on middle management.
