Pros

Discounted shoes and apparel, free items from reps, awesome co-workers, free from the corporate BS that permeates chain stores, freedom to help influence the store's future and inventory.

Cons

Micromanaging owner. Owner is also rather cheap offering very little in the way of raises, especially for promotions, and when a salaried employee left the store the owner didn't promote someone to their position instead chopping up their responsibilities and giving them to current employees for very little raise. No benefits, paid vacation, etc.

Pros

You work with great people/co-workers (and an awesome owner in my case), and get the chance to work with many different types of customers. You get to trouble shoot running injuries. You get to help beginner runners get into the sport. More training than a typical retail job, as Fleet Feet's are specialty retail. The work is fun and not too demanding for the most part. If you're a college or high school kid trying to make a few bucks you really can't beat this job. You'll get excellent experience developing your people skills. You will have a hard time finding a better retail job than working at a Fleet Feet.

Cons

The job can get very monotonous...ESPECIALLY if all you do is work on the floor. You do the same thing all day everyday, deal with the same injuries, and answer the same questions over..and over...and over...and over. Not much room to move up other than being a manager or owner, and the pay is very low without benefits and raises/reviews in many cases. Management will push you to drive sales of certain products with very little incentive and no commission, and will set unrealistic expectations. Sometimes you are asked to push certain products, and can be put in situations with customers recommending these products even though the customer doesn't real need them (which can be really awkward and can lead to unnecessary returns). You very well might be promised things by your boss/management that never materialize. Poor work/life balance. You'll work A LOT of weekends and holidays without much mercy. Management can put themselves on an imaginary "pedestal," and can undermined employees. In summation, you have to take this job for what it is: Use it as a stepping stone, and understand a retail job in most cases is ultimately a dead end (professionally speaking) unless you're in management or are an owner. If you do this, it will make the above much more bearable.
