Pros

Decent weather compared to most states. Robust facilities like gym, tennis courts, swimming pool, running tracks, libraries etc. Office of Postdoc Affairs is a strong advocate of postdocs but has limited say.

Cons

The sad state and mismanagement of postdocs in the United States is well documented in many places. Please read about it carefully before committing to it. If you still feel this is the best way forward, then FSU is one of the better places to work. That said, there is no uniformity in the paychecks of postdoc - even within the same department. Faculty are strongly opposed to the idea of higher pay to postdocs due to their own issues with raising grant money. It was a monumental effort to get them to pay for postdoc insurance. Life for international postdocs is vastly more difficult since FSU will not offer support to file for residency. Given that only 10% of postdocs get faculty positions, the remaining 90% will need to search for positions elsewhere and that search becomes astronomically more difficult for international scholars.

Football, football, football

Pros

Very flexible schedules, generous allotment of time off, excellent choices for healthcare coverage, working on campus is excellent as many services are in walking distance and the hustle and bustle of the students keeps the energy level very high.

Cons

First off it is very dangerous. Forbes magazine has rated Tallahassee as the 8th most dangerous city in the country. I worked at FSU for a year and a half and there were two shootings within two blocks of my office. Very low salaries and no opportunity for annual raises or bonuses. The managers have little to no training in HR, EEO, HIPPA laws, etc. so some of the behavior is appalling. The focus is on the football team beyond anything else so you have to become accustomed to bad press about the ethics of the organization. You have to pay for parking.

Pros

Good colleagues, a good provost, mostly good students (and a few who are extremely good), low cost of living area. Clear, challenging, but reasonable expectations for tenure. Nice old trees in some parts of town.

Cons

Football culture, ugh. Sleazy politicians at the top harming the many decent lower-level folks. A good provost, but variable deans, very variable chairs, and a criminally underfunded library. Very worrisome future horizons. Assessment wonk, a young and hyper-ambitious ed-school type, changed our good curriculum to an experimental nightmare. Far too much committee work and busy-service-work, but that varies by department. As a place to live, Tallahassee is difficult at best. "Cheap" is about the only good thing I can say. Two good restaurants in town. No real culture. Extreme heat and humidity most of the year; brief respite in January and February only. Every smart colleague I know is on the market; this is a chance for some big universities to cherry-pick some under-appreciated talent.
