Pros

Constant customer contact = learning how to deal with all sorts of people, which is a useful skill.

Cons

Horrible pay, no raises for two years (or more, according to some co-workers who had been there longer), no benefits for PT people, FT jobs have been frozen (they cost the company too much $$$), crappy uniform shirts that are impossible to get clean (the synthetic fibers hold fryer odors forever, apparently), no management support for scheduling/delegation of work, management above store level consists of meddling idiots who are only interested in screwing up stores when they visit. No safety oversight, no food safety standards enforced. Beware, customers!!!

Pros

Fair Benefits Interact With Many Different People I Have Good Co-Workers, Bad Store Manager You Can Make Customers Happy If You Own Your Department

Cons

Management Always Puts A Positive Spin On Things, Reality Is The Better Truth If you always pretend to be doing the right thing the problems never come to the surface. Admit the faults so they can be fixed. Big Disconnect Between Job Performance And Recognition For Your Work They Promote The Wrong People A Lot Of Wasted Talent, Why Do More When You Will End Up In The Same Place It is very hard to motivate yourself to do the best job you can when you realize it doesn't matter. I believe people should work as hard as possible no matter what it is. After this goes on for a few years it wears you out. Management might speak highly of you, but that doesn't mean much. Promotions seem to be based on being in the right position, in the right store, at the right time.

Pros

Food Lion is a decent place to work, everyone will always need to buy groceries and such, so working at Food Lion means I will have a job even when all of the video game stores go out of business. Food Lion is conveniently set up. For the most part anyone can find anything they need with ease, if they can't find what they are looking for there is always someone who can help them find the items they are needing. At Food Lion there is always some item on sale, if you have an MVP card then you will get the item on sale, if you don't you can apply for one and it takes maybe 2 mintues of your time. If you are just visiting and don't currently live in a city that has a Food Lion we can and will use of store card for you. Most of the employee's are always willing to offer help and we'll always treat you with courtesy and respect. Food Lion always has a manager on duty who is more than willing to help our customers with any needs they have. I live in a small town so most of us know our customers by name, if not by name then by, at least, face. We recognize the people that come in and most times will stand and have a conversation with you if we are not busy.

Cons

Food Lion managers always treat the customers with respect. But the managers at the store I work at do not treat the employees with very much respect at all. I have been working for Food Lion for almost 2 years, I've been promised an office position many times, but every time a position opens they put someone less experienced than myself in the office. When I ask a manager why I am not being put in office or if there is a problem with the way I do my work that is preventing me from going into office I am told no. But a couple days later I hear from another employee that a manager has a problem with something I do. The managers should be willing to tell the employees what they are doing incorrectly so we can correct our problem. We can't fix something if we don't know what we are doing wrong. And not fixing whatever problem we may have is only hindering our ability to go places in our careers.
