Pros

If you are a hard worker in the right place at the right time, you will easily move up from Main Lab to Path Lab (ie. someone quits or a client demands more testing from now until eternity). Its a great starting point to learn microbiology and quality assurance. You get to actually make a difference in the community, as most of our clients are relatively local. The people who work here are friendly and management likes to step into the lab and help us out when things get tough.

Cons

The building is old and is falling apart. Cracked tiles, exposed wood on counter tops, equipment breaking down and flooding the area every month, and most importantly the AC is never properly fixed. It's in the middle of summer, and some parts of the lab reach 85+F on a daily basis. One time our media department was sent home because it was over 90F in that area alone. Instead, corporate decides to spend more money building new labs and fixing things that were never issues in the past. No one is passionate about food safety here, not even management. Everyone, even management, complains all day about one thing or another and there is nothing being done about morale. We are constantly losing people and can't keep up with the high turnover. Since starting this job, ~20 people have left, with more to follow. And I've only been here for a year! Work-life balance is a joke, and overtime is practically mandatory to keep up with the workload. Overall, I do not trust our results that we send out to clients.

Thank you for your comments. Your feedback is very important. I have shared your post with the Regional Manager and VP of Operations – Facilities. There have been a lot of discussions regarding updates in this facility, repairs done as well as even considering a move – though we will look into what can be done expeditiously. We are working hard to make changes lab by lab and continue to create a culture where our employees are happy, engaged, valued and appreciated. We will review all of your concerns and address them as appropriate. I hope you will consider contacting the Regional Manager or a member of the HR Team to talk through these further. We will need to continue to evolve and make needed changes so that we can continue to provide both quick turnaround times coupled with accurate results. Bob Cox, SVP, HR

Pros

My supervisor was great. An outstanding leader and someone who actually cares for his employees. I work individually with little supervision due to having trust between the supervisor and I. Learned a lot of hands-on skills, light maintenance around the premises, and what to be and not be. Get the job done and get out.

Cons

Weak management team, tedious work, low pay, worked weekends, favoritism, high school kids, college kids who thinks they too good or entitled to things, some people don't say hello back, soft environment, think that is it.

I wish you the very best on your new career. Your feedback is very important. The supervisor you are speaking of is as you have described – he cares about his employees, the company, getting the work done and great customer service. We are working with the leadership team to make positive change and I will get a copy of your review to the Regional Director. In addition, we will be sending out our Leadership Survey this week so that employees can give confidential feedback on their leaders by facility/department. We continue to create a culture where our employees are happy, engaged, valued and appreciated. We understand that there are always opportunities to learn and improve. We don’t always get it right, however, we will continue on the journey of getting there and improving each day. – Bob Cox, SVP, HR.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We continue to look at our structure and refine our strategies. As well, we evaluate our compensation structure on a regular basis to ensure we are competitive within the industry. We also provide many opportunities for growth and development. I hope you will take some time to talk with Liz and other leaders on your thoughts and concerns or give me or a member of the HR Team to discuss further. Thanks Bob Cox, SVP HR
