A place of continuous improvement

Pros

This is a great place to start a career if you're a hard worker looking to develop your skills. The culture is welcoming and results-oriented. You will wear many hats and get exposed to a broad tech stack in much greater depth than you might anywhere else. Consider it a unique opportunity. There aren't a lot of HSM vendors in the world. I deeply value the time I spent working here.

Cons

You risk burning out if your goals are not aligned with the business. Don't expect communication to be all that great between management and the engineers. I saw a lot of positive change during my time here, but the communication is unlikely to improve. There are many reasons why the status quo works that you'll just have to discover for yourself if you choose to work here. This is hardly a unique problem, but it's worth mentioning if you choose to work at a small place like this.

Pros

The code is definitely my favorite part of the job. I like that projects are always varying, but I generally keep to the C++ side of things (my favorite language). There is the full stack here though. Some people work on the low level C firmware for the boards (Like embedded linux drivers that interface with the hardware). Others do C++ above that layer (but still on the crypto cards) doing stuff like implementing algorithms or formats according to standard specifications or customer requirements. Then there's the applications and special projects teams that write the code outside the cards that run the application servers or client interfaces. Most of the current applications stack is C++, however the web teams take the stack all the way up to the new fancy javascript frameworks like Vue.js. Between test scripts, functional testing frameworks, and some middlewares, everyone ends up doing Python at some point. I've had to work on customer code (SDKs or examples) in Java and C#. This is a linux shop, so inevitably you will end up running into some bash. Outside of languages, the technology stack includes fun stuff like docker and Jenkins CI. In the last couple years we've been migrating to new tools like Gitlab and Jira, and adopting an agile workflow. The consistent technology progression makes sure my engineering itch gets scratched. It's definitely been an adventure to watch the technology stack grow and evolve.

Cons

They do make me write Java and C# sometimes (I'm responsible enough to manage my own memory thank you very much!). Only recently have all the code bases got to C++11 (due to legacy hardware and customer environment requirements).

Pros

In my experience it is important to look at several aspects of a company when reviewing. Company Direction - The company is coming out with new and exciting products. - Unlike a lot of tech companies, specifically in the security sector, Futurex stays focused on its roadmap. This has allowed for products that change the market to be developed, even if it takes longer than some public companies can afford. - The company has demonstrated that it hires the best. Everyone in the engineering, marketing, and SA team are extremely intelligent and focus on bringing new, successful, products to the market. Management Direction - The CEO and CTO work closely which has allowed the company to increase its market share greatly since it went private in 2001. The CEO is very focused on the business side and supports the technological direction outlined by the CTO. - As the company has grown, an experienced mix of Directors, Managers and Leads have focused on their individual groups. This focus is another reason why Futurex has continued to grow and succeed with its different offerings. - This growth has opened up the door for extreme opportunity for individuals to lead new teams and business units. On Stability - Again, Futurex is extremely focused on continuing the success it has seen over the past several years. This focus requires teams that are dedicated to the projects at hand and loyal to all they work with. Not everyone has the drive and work ethic needed to succeed here, but those that do, enjoy a management team that share this same dedication and loyalty. - The average tenure at Futurex far exceeds that seen at most tech companies. While it is common to see "company hoppers" at other companies, Futurex rewards those who show loyalty to their team. - When I was going through the hiring process at Futurex, the hiring manager specifically wanted to walk through my education and work history to understand any gaps. It was obvious that their goal was to find someone who not only has the technical aptitude to keep up, but also for someone who is looking for a life-long career. On Atmosphere - Futurex employees enjoy a serine campus with unique perks. This includes a gym membership, too many company outings to count, and a campus that rivals the technology giants found in California. - While the company is diverse, I believe everyone at Futurex would agree that the best thing about working at Futurex is the employees. I have seen this as a common theme throughout all other posts, even from employees that have left the company. I think this is extremely important to take note of.

Cons

- Futurex has focused on innovating the industry, specifically in the hardware encryption and key management markets. The concepts required to understand this technology are vast and demand time to learn, even for those who have been in the industry for many years - Advice to those who are just coming onboard: Just stick with it! While the technology is complicated, eventually everything will "click".
