Working at Grail

Pros

Good culture, good perks, pay is decent for a biotech company

Cons

Upper management is clueless, has no idea what day-to-day operations look like, and will lay off workers not knowing what they do. Upper management also will not hesitate to lie to middle management. Mobility is also not encouraged; management would hire externally rather than promote eligible employees.

Pros

Extremely talented group of people. A lot of the employees, especially most layers of management, are very experienced in their fields and extremely technically proficient. You will learn a lot. Most people are relatively outgoing and friendly, and stay interactive with each other (setting up workshops, discussions, outing events, on-site activities, etc.) Most teams are willing to collaborate and work with you on developing new skills outside of your department. A happy and hard-working atmosphere is emphasized heavily. Company also does its best to accommodate employees “as best they can” considering it is a start-up. Majority of people are willing to make a genuine connection with you.

Cons

Company atmosphere especially climbing up the ladder can feel overly-prideful with an inflated sense of importance. Company and inter-department transparency feels like it stays at a bare minimum level. Considering the talent, employees and various levels of management especially can be very opinionated. Company feels like it puts itself on a pedestal considering funding history and mission statement (not particularly humble environment). Low level employees can tend to complain a lot, disregarding their privileges. Contractors usually get strung along, although conversions are relatively normal. Company changes directions drastically on a seemingly seconds notice, although that can be a normal part of a “start-up” environment. Lack of transparency and lack of addressing professional concerns from lower levels feels disheartening and discouraging at times, especially when big changes happen.

Pros

Super funded and stock with great talent. Important mission that is getting more competitors in liquid biopsy.

Cons

Platform leadership is plagued by insecurity incompetence and doubt. Mentor is gone and lacks backing. Chaos and fear reigns. Not from traditional sequencing experience.
