Pros

The benefits are top of the line. The people are friendly. It is a good company, #2 Healthcare.

Cons

Due to downsizing. . . .a lot of work has been placed on individuals. Should be brought to management attentioni that the more work you place on people, the more shortcuts are going to be taken, errors are going to made and accidents will happen.

Pros

Excellent pay. Benefits are outstanding (especially prescription drug coverage). Onsite cafeterias (with decent food). Several Fitness centers onsite. Twenty four hour security. Cutting technology in the labs. Safety is priority one.

Cons

Politics. It seems that folks who do the bulk of the work are never promoted, while the folks who simply compile data into charts move up the ladder. There is a feeling of lack of trust and respect. If a few hours is spent away from work for personal errands/doctor appointments, every minute is expected to be made up. That is fine. However if extra time is spent or if there is unscheduled weekend work (in order to meet deadlines, etc.) there is NO comp time. If you work extra hours, you're working for free.

Pros

The beneifts at GSK are a great incentive. I have yet to see a comparable benefits package from anyone in a pharmaceutical organization. The employee health management is incredible. There are many benefits available to GSK employees that assist in the work and personal life balance. In most organizations, the dust has settled with re-organizations due to the current economic climate. For the organizations that have been addressed, employees understand their job objectives and the opportunity for advancement is within reach for the employees putting out the extra effort. GSK also has incredible communication from Senior management to worker bee. Communications are constantly being distributed to employees regarding pipeline drugs and opportunities in the community.

Cons

Currently, there is a lot of bureaucracy at GSK. I would say this is specific to IT, but I hear this is an issue throughout all organizations. Our former CEO expressed how much he disliked all the barriers employees have to complete their tasks. A lot of legwork was performed to remedy this, and I feel the changing of Sr. Management has caused employees to feel less empowered. The bureaucracy still exists and in 11 years now, it has never been more visible. Another downside would be the constant outsourcing efforts. Granted, there is a obligation to stockholders to maximize their investments. The effect that outsourcing has on employee performance and morale is off the chart. The environment used to be a family environment. It feels like a very selfish environment now.
