Talented Team, Poor Management

Pros

I'll probably never work with a team like I did at Gaia again. They were a fun and very talented group of people. This place felt like a family and I consider myself lucky to have been a part of it. Work-life balance was a crucial part of the culture. Used to be flexible about work hours and benefits were great (100% premium covered)

Cons

It's really a shame, this place used to be such a fun place to work. Unfortunately, it wasn't always productive. - Some management hired based on their MBA, not skills or competence. Others are hired because they are good engineers/artists/etc, but it doesn't necessarily mean they make effective managers. - Lack of direction and process, making projects run very inefficiently. - Sometimes the focus is on the build limitations instead of asking "Is this fun to play" Not enough transparency/feedback between teams to know about updates/changes. - No opportunity for career growth. You do what you were hired to do and that's it. The only time you do more is when someone leaves and you take over their work, with no job title or raise. Left because I no longer felt fulfilled or valued.

Pros

Great staff! Met plenty of new people, including those that had actually come from being users on the site. A select few were so dedicated, that they would push out bug fixes at 2AM!! They wouldn't stop working no matter what, because they loved the community.

Cons

Management... Our former CEO was great! He had plenty of ideas, and used to work with me one on one! He would create comic ideas and stories that would keep the community excited and involved with what was happening around the office. Now, nothing. The users of the site are just a cash cow to be sucked for as much money as possible before things fall apart. The manager now doesn't even care.

Talented team ruined by new management

Pros

Pros? I don't know if there are many nowadays. Lunch is still free, and the new office space is decorated nicely. Prior to the shakeup, I met many of the most brilliant coworkers I'd ever had. They oozed talent, and there was little to none of that "office politics" culture that occurs at many startups. It was friendly, respectful, and I was personally proud of the products we were putting out on the mobile side, and the experiences we gave users on the Gaia Online side.

Cons

With new management this year, the vibe immediately became unpleasant. Exhibiting unabashed cronyism, new managers hired additional managers they'd worked with in the past to assist in gutting the company of its talent. Together, they've turned what was once a pleasant, enjoyable workplace into a humiliating grind to either drink the kool-aid and remain employed for another month, or just throw your hands up and openly apply for other jobs during work hours. I don't believe any of the remaining employees (sans management) are under the impression that positive change is occurring, or that Gaia will ever return to the intensely creative and unique studio it once was.
