Pros

It's rare to find a brand that has so much brand recognition and heritage in American fashion. The employee discount is also great. Since Gap owns a tons of stores, there are tons of opportunities and challenges the company faces which makes for an exciting job. If you are interested in fashion and want to be in San Francisco, this is a great place to start.

Cons

Given poor performance for an extended period of time, morale is low and turnover is high, which means less retention of knowledge and inexperienced employees. The organization is very functional siloed, so different functional teams working in the same brand do not communicate or coordinate enough. There is also poor portfolio management, as all three brands have some overlap.

Pros

Gap on the surface is a very people friendly place to work. They are one of the few companies that talk about work/life balance and actually practice what they preach. I feel I was paid very well as a single store manager with Old Navy Outlet. I really liked the salary/compensation reports that were sent out. These reports showed you how much you made and what your benefits package added to your total annual salary. I really enjoyed the Store Manager meetings held in off-site locations, where we learned about what was going on in the company and usually some form of leadership training.

Cons

I don't feel that performance is recognized either by praise or through promotions. It is all about who you know and not what you know within the organization. Their purpose, values, and behaviors are great until they have to live by them, they are not so friendly to individuals that have health concerns. So, I would say they are what you would call "Fair weather Fans", as long as you're healthy and contributing at a high level, they are your best friend, if you get ill or have a health concern, it's like you're kicked to the curb(literally). I would be extremely cautious when determining if the Gap is the place for you.
