Pros

In general, the employees are very nice and intelligent people. The campus is amazing. Garmin is really trying to capture the laid back "coastal" vibe of other tech companies, and I think externally at least they have been successful. It's a laid back culture with some skeletons in the closet (read on).

Cons

Women: be prepared to work 10x harder than any man on the team to get recognized. Then be prepared to be resented by your colleagues for it. Good luck obtaining sufficient mentoring, by the way. If you are the only woman on your team (which is likely), be prepared to go days without anyone talking to you or attempting to collaborate with you. Your team members will spend a lot of time together in the office, and you will be excluded, from meetings and otherwise. You will have to explicitly ask to be included and it will wear on you over time. I am so disappointed in this company's failure in this respect, especially since they advertise diversity and inclusion measures. There is a severe lack of women in the aviation segment in particular, and the gray beard management is not helping to attract more. Also, the PTO is abysmal. No separate sick is honestly embarrassing. I am not a lead but I also find it unfair that leads can't choose to work remotely. Everyone should be able to take advantage of the hybrid schedule if their job duties allow for it.

Ups and downs

Pros

My boss was really good. Good health care and the stock program was alright. Retirement matching was great but with the caveat that it doesn't vest until 5 year mark.

Cons

The pay is quite low relative to my field. With 8 years of experience and a handful of advanced certs I was still making less than 100k. In this economic climate I just couldn't make that work anymore so I left when I got offered what I'm worth. The office felt depressing and I could go a whole week without anybody talking to me. It gave off a really weird vibe and made me hate going into the office. They would always say that going into the office is necessary for collaboration and team chemistry but my team had none. Their WFH policy when I interviewed and started was flexible but slowly started becoming more strict.
