Pros

Good health benefits, fun people to work with, ESPP program and 401k are amazing.

Cons

Location is terrible for new employees in terms of within the city. It would be great if HQ had a "satellite" office downtown KC rather than in the suburbs where there is nothing to do other than watch Saturday Soccer games at the High Schools. Kansas City is actually a really fun town but Garmin's location within the city is really dragging down the talent retention.

Pros

Garmin is the kind of place that you go to work when you want something safe, with adequate pay, decent benefits, and a 40 hr a week load because your life emphasis is outside the workplace. The headquarters location in suburban Kansas City ironically mirrors this sentiment. A suburban utopia of highly rated schools and from a national perspective- relatively affordable housing opportunities make an ideal location for the family oriented employee.

Cons

Garmin is not the place to work if you want to light the world on fire, want upward mobility, financial reward or future opportunity. The future prospectus is murky as portable navigation devices have fallen out of favor, forcing Garmin to look to emerging and third world markets to make up the slack, shift the identity of the company to a fitness-oriented focus, and deal with the ever increasing competition in what was historically their exclusive space from giants such as Apple, Google and Microsoft. If you're awesome and you know it, look elsewhere.

Pros

They pay well for the area and the benefits package is the best around. The people are friendly and there are lots of out of work activities arranged.

Cons

They had the audacity to advertise themselves as the "Google of the mid-west" but nothing could be further from the truth. This is a grey, old fashioned cubicle farm where employees clock in at 8, go through hours of pointless meetings and clock out at 5pm on the dot with barely any work being done. If you do try to get any work done you will be hit by roadblocks at every turn. Usually fighting their out-dated internal software and practices but it can also be peers and management expressing shock (and disappointment!) at your progress for "making them look bad". I didn't last long here. It felt like being strangled and suppressed, dying a little piece every day until you join the ranks of the Garmin zombies trudging through to retirement and a gold watch.
