Pros

The healthcare benefits are good. It’s stable. Cafeteria does a pretty good job and there’s a small park, soccer and volleyball fields on their campus.

Cons

I do not recommend joining Garmin as a designer. It is not a valued team, role or skill set. Research is sparse, opportunity to have an impact on the products is almost nonexistent, and even if you deliver on a 1,000/1 chance it doesn’t matter because they don’t follow up on KPI’s or real metrics, so delivering a breakthrough feature or making a meaningful update to an existing one has no effect on your job or career. The only real goal of a UX designer is not to be humiliated during demos and reviews by insecure middle managers. UX leadership won’t go to bat for their team members’ work for the same reason. Opportunities for advancement are sparse and usually only go to white men—I wish I was kidding. Pay is below average in the market. You can do better.

Pros

The benefits and work/life balance are leaps and bounds better than my past big business employers. Without researching it too carefully, I'd guess the benefits are some of the best within the United States. I was genuinely astounded while making selections. Management seems to be very invested in helping grow my professional development, while providing a realistic level of transparency, trust, and autonomy. The culture is incredibly inclusive and positively vocal about equality in a way that I had never experienced from an employer. It is refreshing to see the unflinching compassion and support for all people, especially from an organization of this size. The company is also passionate about leaving as small an environmental impact as possible. There are numerous eco-friendly initiatives happening consistently. More can always be done, but they are putting in a noticeable effort. As an added bonus, they provide a lot of free and discounted outside of work activity opportunities that have increased my personal outdoor and fitness activity level, as well as my family's. I am a person who works to live, rather than lives to work and my team and company seems to truly support and encourage that lifestyle. I very much hope I have found a long-term place of work.

Cons

After my first 8 months, I only have good things to say.
