Pros

Laid back dress code, pretty good health insurance and great 401k match, not micromanaged at all, teams that I'm aware of use modern tools (outside of aviation). There are a lot of good people at Garmin, and everyone is very approachable. If you want a job that you can work no more than 40 hours every week if you want, have kids and want to send them to decent public schools, and keep chugging comfortably along toward retirement, Garmin is definitely the place for you.

Cons

When I was hired, I was given the impression that Garmin has an innovative culture that encourages creativity. This couldn't be further from the truth. I don't know if it's the sleepy conservative midwest culture that Kansas breeds, but there is just no drive or investment from anyone to be innovative and cutting-edge in the products. As a result, always releasing products a day late and a dollar short. Management is too cheap, and in competitive segments cutting corners is not something that should be done if you don't want the Silicon Valley companies completely eradicating your market share when they inevitably move into your niche strongholds. Complementing the sleepy midwest culture, the location of HQ is in Olathe, KS, which is a very far-flung suburb of KC. This location attracts a certain type of employee, and it isn't the type of employee you desperately need (the ones that are driven and really put their heart into their work). Olathe, KS (as opposed to KC proper or elsewhere) as a headquarters location will continue to drag down the talent pool you desperately need to remain relevant.

Pros

Good work-life balance. Decent salary for the area. Decent benefits. I hear good things about the non-avation-segments at garmin (Personal Navigation Devices, fitness, outdoor, marine).

Cons

Aviation is necessarily slow. Be prepared to work with tools that are well over 20 years old, mostly home grown. Most of management is made of former engineers. Unfortunately, most of them started as EEs and do not understand software. Most believe C is the ideal language for any and every problem faced in the field (actually, a few admitted to me they'd prefer to develop our customer facing GUIs in assembly language). You'll frequently get pulled of of your project for weeks at a time to help other teams test their code. This mostly means getting code coverage. There are very few opportunities for learning. Management makes no attempt to keep you up-to-date with the happenings of computer science or the latest tools/technology for engineering software. I can't recommend getting a job in Garmin's aviation segment unless you're prepared to spend your career there. You won't acquire very many marketable skills.

Pros

Benefits like health and dental are really good. Monday through Friday work schedule. Fun annual trip to Worlds of Fun and Christmas party.

Cons

Little actual technical troubleshooting involved. Most calls are from people that do not know where the start button is on their computer. Make sure you would be ok with giving computer lessons to your grandparents for 8 hours a day. All time off comes out of your PTO regardless of if you are on vacation or sick. Low pay and small yearly raises like 25 to 50 cents per hour if you can manage to get one. The annual raise structure is setup so that no matter how you do, x amount of people in a team will receive nothing. Very few people advance out of the call center once they start there. Toxic work environment where coworkers are pitted against each other for the few advancement opportunities that exist. Little to no guidance from management or HR for career growth. Rigid attendance point system.
