Lots of lone sharks

Pros

If you are an analyst at Gartner, you can have unmatched visibility within the technology space. You have no lack of companies and people who would like to talk with you, and you have a real opportunity to affect the business strategies of the largest and most important technology companies. Gartner is also an incredibly flexible and virtual company - with the vast majority of the analyst population working from home and in remote locations, as opposed to central offices.

Cons

Since everyone is working alone - there are a lot of loner type personalities. Thinking can be very "ivory tower" sometimes. Compensation is all over the board, and lots of bureaucracy. Performance targets for analysts change every year, or even mid-year, and there are too many different things that analysts have to focus on.

Pros

People are smart, generally helpful and nice. Overall, my experience there was a good one. I had exposure to a good cross section of the company and was able to interact with people in research, sales, IT, events, and senior management.

Cons

In the past, there was a considerable amount of management turn over. I think this has slowed down a bit in the last year or two though.

Pros

Be the acknowledged authority on something. Manage yourself and pursue the things you think are important. Work with smart people. Influence high-profile clients and shape the industry. There are amazing opportunities for the right person. Charismatic, aggressive self-starters with good technical knowledge and marketing savvy will thrive.

Cons

Potentially, long hours and lots of travel. Annoying bureaucracy. Terrible IT systems. Ineffectual management. Nebulous goals. Performance measurement seemingly by dartboard. Some people work really hard, and some people slack all the time, and no one seems to be able to tell the difference.
